Hydrocarbon potential of the Caspian bassin is converting the region to one of the important energy hubs in the world. Taking into consideration the strengthening role of Azerbaijan and the Central Asian countries as well as Russia’s and Iran’s exceptional influence on oil and gas map no one doubts any longer in sabile increase of oil and gas products offered by the Caspian countries on the world market in the near future.

Alongside with that Europe sees its energy security in realization of alternative route to Russia and is strongly interested in the work of the Central Asia-Caspian-South Caucasus-Turkey transit coridor. In such a historicallly significant moment when use of Azerbaijan’s, Turkmenistan’s and Kazakhstan’s hydrocarbons as a stabile energy resource contributes both to the enhancement of region’s wellfare and partially meets the increasing energy demand of Europe, energy reserves of the Caspian bassin has made not only economists but also politicians analyse over the issue.

Large experience of Azerbaijan with foreign companies in the field of exploitation of oil and gas and organization of their transportation as well as energy policy of our country which plays a crusial role in the region presents a great interest for European as well as world experts.

The Caspian Energy Studies Center at Khazar University which is a prominent university in Azerbaijan is occupied with investigation of this and other issues.

The Center implements both academic and study activity like relevant structures in most universities of Europe and the world. It is also known as relatevely independent expert institute.

Objective

To analyse energy potential of the Caspian Sea, to establish specialised scientific and expert center on Caspian energy studies, to convert the center to a well-known institution in the region.

Profile  

1. Exploitation of curricula on various directions of energy field as well as organization of corresponding courses.
2. Creation of research groups on various directions of energy field as well as involving them to projects.
3. Preparation of popular, scientific and periodical publications on energy.
4. Conducting specific seminars on energy at Khazar University.
5. Preparation of recommendations for the Government and Parliament as well as for other relevant institutions.

The Centre will be mainly focused on the following directions:  

1. Researches and publications regarding oil and gas reserves as well as their production in the countries of the Caspian bassin.
2. Political and economic researches related to oil and gas transportation.
3. Experience of regional countries in the sphere of oil contracts.
4. Researches on possibilities of the region regarding the European energy security
5. Investigation of opportunities regarding renewable energy types and assistance in the implementation of relevant projects.
6. Investigation of the impact of oil and gas revenues to economy.
7. Investigations regarding the models of utilization of oil and gas revenues.
8. Investigation of situation regarding the carbon emission in the regional countries as well as conducting debates on this topic.
