January 9-16th, 2010

Prof. Hamlet Isaxanli, the President of Khazar University, was recently on a business trip in Libya. He spoke about the results of the visit to the correspondent of “Khazar News”:

– During the visit of delegates of Libya in Azerbaijan to Khazar Universty, we noted the significance and importance of establishing relationships between our countries and universities in the field of education. Afterward, I was invited to Libya to meet with the presidents of high  schools.

Libya gives reading and writing knowledge very high priority. Higher education is newly established. Libya University was founded in Benghazi city in the middle of 1950 and then continuing its operation in Tripoli playing a very significant role. In 1973, this university was divided into Garyounis in Benghazi, and Al-Fateh in Tripoli. We can name the Universities of 7 April and 7 October among the great universities.

I was met at the airport in Tripoli, the capital of Libya, and then went to the University of 7 April in Az-Zavia city, in the west.  Firstly, I met with Usama, the official of the Ministry of Education. He was my coordinator in Libya. Dr. Meftah Almrabet, the President, as well as his associates Dr. Camal F. Badda, the director of the scientific researches and high class center; and Dr. Sabri Alkatib, the director of department on foreign relations, were very polite and kind to me. I met with the directors of the School of Engineering, and discussed issues about the establishment of business relations, questions on the education of their students studying in the field of science and engineering in Khazar University, as well as inviting Azerbaijani teachers to Libya for teaching there. We signed an agreement. Then, I visited both campus of the School of Engineering, and another campus in the historical city of Sabratha.

Later, we went to west from Tripoli. I was the guest at Al-Mergib University in Al-Khums city. I met with Mohamed Edweb, the president of university, and discussed some issues. Dr. Ayad M. Shahut, who studied and researched in North Caucasus and Belarus, guided me and acted as translator during the meeting. Prof. Mohamed F. Giaziri, the vice president of the university, was very interested in the establishment of serious relations between the universities.

Later, we went to Zleten which is in the east. Al-Asmarya University on Islamic Sciences is situated here. We decided to sign the agreement after preparing its equivalent in Azerbaijani in Baku as the agreement was only in Arabic.

The last place of my visit was the University of 7 October in Misratah city, which is located a little bit to the west. Prof. Meftah A. Shwehdy, the president of University, is the surgeon; he studied in Germany, and has a background about Azerbaijan. My meeting with Ali Bakir, the director of international office; and Dr. Muhammed Hadi,  the director of the scientific researches and high class center; Mohamed Naji Zubia, the director of English Department; and others was very interesting.

On the last day I met with Aghasalim Shukurov, the representative of Azerbaijan in Libya, in Tripoli Airport. We spoke for two hours and he explained to me his thoughts about some ideas of a possible relationship between Libya and Azerbaijan. We decided to consult over some issues.
