Doctoral thesis discussion of Khazar University employee was held

    On 19 May, 2017, the initial discussion of a PhD thesis of Jabir Mammadov Oruj, an employee of Khazar University and a PhD candidate of the Institute of Philosophy within Azerbaijan National Academy of  Sciences was held. The research work is entitled as "The Tragedy problem in Aesthetics” (Specialty: 721101-Aesthetics). Prof. Ilham Mammadzadeh, Doctor of Science in Phlosophy, director of the Institute of Philosophy, was a chairman of the meeting.

    Faculty Staff Member at Ordu University

      On May 11, 2017, Melek Kerimova, Assistant Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Director of Khazar Psychological Services Center, participated at the 9th International Congress of Educational Research coordinated by Ordu University, Turkey and ERA (Education Research Association). She introduced her research work entitled “Connection between Internet Addiction of University Students and its Psychological Symptoms”. The research work conducted among the university students investigates the connection between internet addiction and various sub-scales (somatization, obsession, depression, anxiety, phobia, paranoia, psychoticism). The presentation was greeted with great interest and suggestions were made on conducting intercultural researches.At the end, Melek Kerimova was presented with a certificate and a book covering the delivered speeches.1254 researchers from 12 countries took part at the Ninth International Congress of Educational Research organised by Ordu University and ERA (Education Research Association) in Ordu, Turkey, on May 11-14.


      Faculty Staff Member at International Conference

         On May 13, 2017,Melek Kerimova, Assistant Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Director of Khazar Psychological Services Center, participated at the international conference “Quest For Beauty In Science, Culture And Arts". It was organised by International Rating Academia and Kepez Municipality. Melek Kerimova presented her thesis entitled " Masters and their personal psychological characteristics". The research work investigating art, personal qualities of masters, the influence of art on personality and personalities reflection in artworks was greeted with great interest.At the end, Melek Kerimova was presented with a certificate.


        Khazar University Staff Members at Republican Scientific-Practical Conference

          On May 11-12, 2017,instructors of English Language and Literature Department Irina Orujova, Elmira Aliyeva, Zamira Gurbanova (PhD student), Gulnaz Novruzzadeh (PhD student), Milana Abbasova PhD student and  Minor Programs Coordinator of  the Department and Valida Karimova, PhD student and Dean's assistant of School of Humanities and Social Sciences, participated at the Republican Scientific-Practical Conference held with coordination of the Ministry of Education of Azerbaijan Republic and Azerbaijan University of Languages. The conference entitled  "Actual problems of teaching foreign languages" was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the establishment of AUL. Theses of the above mentoned instructors entitled “Обучение стилистическому приему сравнение на уроках художественного перевода (на материале рассказов Э.Хемингуэя)"(Irina Orujova), “Дискурс и коммуникативная компетенция” (Elmira Aliyeva), “Azərbaycan və ingilis dillərində inkarlıq kateqoriyası” (Gulnaz Novruzzadeh), “Sosial şəbəkələrin tələbələrin ingiliscəsinə təsiri” (Milana Abbasova), “Analyzing the features of Publicist style. Political metaphor in the media” (Valida Karimova) were delivered during the conference.The conference covered topics such as challenges encountered in learining, teaching foreign languages, the role of  ICT in the study of English language, the concept of meaning in language learning and so on. Afgan Abdullayev, the acting rector of AUL and Fakhraddin Veysalli, professor of the department of Linguistics, made speeches as well. At the end of the conferenc, the participants were presented certificates and a book covering the delivered speeches.


          Faculty's Jean Monnet Conference on the EU-Azerbaijan Relations

            On May 10, 2017, the Department of Political Science and International Relations held a conference on the EU-Azerbaijan relations in the framework of Europe Day celebrations in cooperation with the European Union Delegation in Azerbaijan.Prof. Hamlet Isakhanli, the founder of Khazar University, the Chairman of its Board of Directors and Truestees, welcomed the conference participants and highlighted the international cooperation projects of the university.Mr. Denis Daniilidis, theFirst Counselor of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, stressed the positive trend in bilateral relations between the EU and Azerbaijan boosted by the visit of President Ilham Aliyev to Brussels in February 2017 and spoke about the launch of negotiations for a New Comprehensive Agreement. He informed the audience that the first draft text of negotiations originated from the Azerbaijani government which reflects the principles of differentiation and mutual respect between both sides. Mr. Daniilidis also welcomed the resumption of the inter-parliamentary cooperation between the European Parliament and Milli Mejlis of Azerbaijan.Mr. Orkhan Zeynalov, Head of Division for Cooperation with the EU at the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, talked about the prospects of bilateral cooperation in areas such as education and science. Mr. Zeynalov also underscored the progress on the Southern Gas Corridor. In his capacity as the Key Negotiator for the part of the agreement on sectorial cooperation, Mr. Zeynalov informed that the first round of negotiation that took place in Baku in late April, 2017 was very constructive and reflected the political willingness of both sides to enhance cooperation in new areas. Ms. Vusala Gurbanova, Senior Adviser of the Department of Science, Higher and Secondary Education at the Ministry of Education, highly appreciated the support of EU for the internationalization of the higher education in Azerbaijan. She noted that Khazar University is particularly active in international cooperation projects. Ms. Gurbanova also informed the audience about the activities carried out to improve the university study programs. Dr. Mukhtar Hajizada, Jean Monnet Chair and the Head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations informed the participants about the EU-related courses and research at the department. He informed that the department regularly hosts a series of events, including the one titled European Seminars, delivered by authoritative experts, practitioners, scholars and professors in EU matters to share their expertise with the Azerbaijani audience. Dr. Hajizada highlighted the necessity of promoting the understanding between the communities in the EU and Azerbaijan and welcomed the activities carried out to improve the existing sufficient conditions for it. He mentioned the importance of the agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Azerbaijan on the facilitation of the issuance of visas which came into effect in 2014. He drew attention to the importance of EU`s increasing its influence and peaceful intentions in Azerbaijan. Unlike many countries in the neighborhood, there is no EU Resource and Information Centre in Azerbaijan. Therefore Dr. Hajizada mentioned the need for more quantitative interactions and more qualitative communications.The conference followed by the Model European Union simulation on “Negotiation and Decision Making in the European Council” by the students of departments of Political Science, International Relations and European Studies on energy cooperation and TAP project.

              The Next Article of fcaulty's PhD candidate Published

              The article of Valida Kerimova, PhD candidate and Dean's assistant of School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Khazar University, entitled “Typological characteristics of Discourse” ( In English) was published in the 2nd issue of the “Scientific News” of Azerbaijan University of Languages which is recommended for the periodic scientific publications of Higher Attestation Commission. The paper covers the issues related with different types (newspaper, political, legal, literary, academic or scientific etc.) of discourse from pragmatic and cognitive perspective of the discourse participants.  It reveals that characteristic feauture of newspaper, political, legal, literary, academic discourse is argumentation  based on cause- effect relations.


              IV International Conference on Psychology

                On April 22-23, 2017, IV International Conference on Psychology was held at “Nefchiler” campus of Khazar University with the coordination of the University`s Psychology Department and Psychological Counseling Center.  Participants included specialists from various regions of the country and people who are interested in the related field. The conference was attractive to many participants because of the tightly interwoven practical and theoretical knowledge it offers.  On April 22, the conference’s official opening was held and lectures were presented. On April 23, the participants took part in the workshops.Melek Karimova, Assistant Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences as well as Director of Khazar Psychological Services Center, opened the conference and gave the floor to Professor Hamlet Isakhanli, the founder of Khazar University and Chairman of its Board of Directors and Trustees. Then Prof. Dr. Ali Kemal Tekin from Oman took the floor. During the conference, lectures were presented by local and Turkish guest psychologists and psychiatrists who spoke about various fields of psychology.  Conference participants included Assistant Professor Dr. Ayten Zara, Istanbul Bilgi University;  Pr.Dr. Ali Kemal Tekin, Sultan Qaboos University, Head of the Department of Early Childhood Education, UNESCO Consultant;  Pr.Dr. Yashar Ozbay, Vice-rector of Hasan Kalyoncu University,  academician at Black Sea Technical University and  Pr. Dr. Burhanettin Kaya, an expert on psychiatry in  Medical Center for Individual Therapy in Antalya. Associated Prof. Dr. Ayten Zara participated in the conference with a 6- people team called “World Human Relief”. The members of this team Dilan Bozdagh, Seher Tarhan, Esra Zirhlioghlu, Tugce Merve Aytac, Narli Yildiz, and Kader Tarhan delivered their speeches.The topics discussed during the conference included causes and ways of preventing aggressive, antisocial, emotional behavioral disorders in children, positive  development and stability of family, sexual abuse and exploitation of children, trauma and  using EMDR methods in disorders associated with it.At the end of the conference, all the participants were awarded a certificate.A concert program by Department of Music and Fine Arts was introduced to the conference participants.


                Faculty Member’s Article Published in Russia

                  The article of Valida Kerimova, PhD candidate and Dean's assistant of School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Khazar University, entitled “Развитие иностранных языков как способ общественной дипломатии” was published in 14th issue of the scientific journal “Молодой ученый” printed in Kazan, Tatarstan (Russian Federation).The research deals with a foreign language as means of communication, contrasts language and communication, expands on language usage aims in contemporary world.


                  HSS Faculty Member’s Article Published in America

                    In March 2017, the article of Valida Kerimova, PhD candidate and Dean's assistant of School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Khazar University, entitled “Language Ethics: Linguo Psychology And Psycholinguistics; Analysis of The Language With Psychological Problems” was published in the scientific journal "Psychology and Behavioral Sciences" by the publishing house “Science Publishing Group”.The main objectives of the research work are to give brief information about schools and directions in psycholinguistics, to investigate the essence of language, its functions, principles and techniques, as well as, provide brief and essential information to people on how to perceive, comprehend and produce language. The article, analyzing the main concepts of the fields of psychology and linguistics, covers language and speech pathology, language psychology,language learning and behaviour, and   cognitive sciences.


                    Faculty employee’s article published

                      On March 30, 2017, an article authored by Valide Karimova, Khazar university doctoral student and assistant to the dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, entitled “Aesthetic Theory in Literary Criticism” was published in the Scientific News Journal of Sumgait State University. The article is an analysis of the use of the aesthetic concept in literary criticism; it also contains discussions and findings of previous studies. 


                      School's student won European Championship

                      On February 17-24, 2017, a European Sanshou Tournament was held in Lutsk, Poland. Firudin Hasanov, third-year student of Khazar University’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences majoring in translation studies, took first place and earned a gold medal in the event (85 kg). We note that Firudin Hasanov is a winner of several international championships. He has been the Azerbaijani champion of his category 6 times and has won a gold medal in the 2013 European Championship in Bulgaria and in the 2015 tournament in Baku; and a silver medal in the 2016 adult world kickboxing championship in Kharkov. Athletes from 17 countries participated in the Lutsk tournament. In addition to Firudin, nine athletes from Azerbaijan participated in the event. They have won a total of 9 medals in their weight classes, 6 gold and 3 silver. 


                      “Panzer” became Champion

                      On February 18, 2017, the final match of the university-wide football championship organized by Khazar University Student Union took place. The championship started as a competition of ten teams. As two of the teams never participated in the matches, eight teams were competing for the championship trophy. “Panzer” and “International stars” played the final match on February 18. The match ended with a score of 4-1 – “Panzer” became the champion of the 2016/17 academic year. 


                      FALL-2016 

                      “Disabilities and Attitudes Toward Them” Article Contest Winners Announced

                      On December 28, 2016, a closing ceremony was held for the “Disabilities and Attitudes Toward Them” article contest which was held by Khazar University Psychological Services Center and the Center for Students with Disabilities. During the event, Rima Mammadova, project manager of the “Establishment of a Foundation for the Integration of Disabled People into HEIs of Azerbaijan” (ESFIDIP) TEMPUS project and coordinator of the Center for Students with Disabilities, made a presentation about the project and the Center. Melek Karimova, Director of the Psychological Services Center, spoke about disabilities, their characteristics and attitudes toward them. She also gave information to participants about the Khazar Psychological Services Center. Then the top 8 winners of the article contest, which began in October, were announced. First place went to Samir Imanov, second place to Kamale Resulova, and third place to Elshan Daghlar. At the end of the event, Samir Imanov spoke about the contest and the book he had written. Other participants in the event included representatives from partners in the “Establishment of a Foundation for the Integration of Disabled People into HEIs of Azerbaijan” (ESFIDIP) TEMPUS project including Sumgayit State University, Azerbaijan State Economics University, Scientific Research and Training Center of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of the Azerbaijan Republic, Khazar University faculty and staff members, and other guests. 


                      School of Humanities and Social Sciences and School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Meet with Alumni

                      On December 22, 2016, the university administration held a meeting with fourteen 2016 bachelor-level graduates of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences as well as five graduates of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Participants in the meeting included President Hassan Niknafs; Professor Mahammad Nuriyev, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Associate Professor Jabir Khalilov, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences; and Baba Bayramli, Director of the Center for Alumni Relations. The objective of the meeting was to maintain relationships with alumni and discuss their future plans. At the end of the meeting, alumni shared their thoughts and impressions of the university.


                      “Towards Perfection” Event

                      On December 14, 2016, the Khazar University Psychological Services Center held an event entitled “Towards Perfection” upon popular demand of the students. The goal of the event was to get young people interested in a healthy lifestyle, proper nutrition, avoidance of bad habits, fitness, and psychological health by showing them examples.The main lecturer was Fovqi Efendiyev, graduate of the nutritional engineering program at Middle East Technical University in Turkey.During the event, students learned how to attain their ideal weight, what is good nutrition, and how to break bad habits.


                      Faculty Student Earns Silver Medal in World Championship

                      On December 5-7, 2016, an adult world kickboxing championship was held in Kharkov, Ukraine. Firudin Hasanov, third-year student of Khazar University’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences majoring in translation studies, took second place and earned a silver medal in the event. We note that Firudin Hasanov is a winner of several international championships. He has been the Azerbaijani champion of his category 6 times and has won gold medals in European and Eurasian competitions.  


                      Faculty Members’ Articles Accepted to International Conference in Turkey  

                      Articles by Melek Karimova, Assistant Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Valida Karimova, Assistant to the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, were accepted to an international conference (ICQH) which was held in Sakarya, Turkey on November 24-25, 2016. Participants in the conference included researchers from America, Germany, Malaysia and other countries.Melek Karimova presented her article on “Misbehavior in the classroom: Perspectives of Azerbaijani teachers,” and Valida Karimova presented her article on “Possibility of foreign languages in the education system of Azerbaijan: Analysis of the best foreign language among students in higher private educational institutions,” at the conference remotely via video presentations.

                      Assistant to Dean Publishes Book in Germany

                      On October 19, 2016, Valida Karimova, Assistant to the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at Khazar University, published her book entitled “Metaphor in Political Discourse” (ISBN 978-3-659-97239-3) through Lambert Academic Publishing in Saarbrücken, Germany. Lambert Academic Publishing, which covers 40 countries and150,000 writers, suggested publication when they saw Karimova’s article on “The English Language for Global Communication: Perspective of Youth” (No. 348, March 2016, pp. 70\ ISSN 2218-2772, http://khazar-review.khazar.org/) in the Khazar Review journal.       The book “Metaphor in Political Discourse” was published in two languages and contains 53 pages. The book discusses main concepts of the linguistic aspects of metaphor, its use as a subject in political discourse, research on metaphor in English language, its political expression in media, and other characteristics of metaphor and political expression.                       Simulation at Khazar in the Press 

                      On May 18, 2016, Khazar University’s Department of Political Science and International Relations began a simulation game on “Madrid Principles in Resolving the Mountainous Karabakh Conflict” in its Conflict Studies class. Information about the simulation was published on the azpress.az news site and is available (in Azerbaijani) at the following link: http://azpress.az/index.php?lang=az§ionid=news&id=53478   Faculty Members at International Conference in Samsun, Turkey On May 3-9, 2016, Melek Karimova (PhD student), Vice Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Valida Karimova (PhD student), Research Assistant for the School, participated in the 6th International “Psychological Counselling and Guidance: Working through our life goals” Conference held in Samsun with the invitation of the Samsun City National Education Administration and the Samsun Canik District Municipality. Along with local participants, the conference included over 500 participants from various countries. Melek Karimova presented a paper on “Education in Azerbaijan: Psychological Counselling and Guidance in Azerbaijan.” She also led a workshop on “Children with Disabilities and Psychological Services to their Families.” She also became a member of a scientific organization for foreign countries at the conference. Valida Karimova was also invited by the Samsun Canik District Municipality to participate under the “Working through our life goals” theme. She successfully made presentations and took part in many workshops.                       Faculty Member Prepares Psychological Test 

                      On May 2, 2016, the mir.com news site published an article entitled “What percent of Azerbaijani Students have Internet Addiction?” based on the research of Melek Kerimova, instructor for the Psychology Department within the Khazar University School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Turkish expert Selim Gunuc, in which they adapted a test on internet addiction for use in Azerbaijan.                       Staff Members at Conference

                      Valida Karimova, PhD student in Linguistics and Research Assistant for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Lamiya Hajili, Dean’s Assistant, participated in the “Current Problems of Philology" Conference which was held on April 30, 2016 at Baku Slavic University. At the conference, Valida Karimova presented an article on “Globally Bridging: I Speak Your Language,” while Lamiya Hajili presented “Tarixə Nəzərən Təhsilin Anlami” in Azerbaijani (Understanding Education from a Historical Perspective). At the end of the conference, the participants were awarded with certificates and books of the published conference materials.


                      Staff Members Present at IV International Scientific Conference held at Qafqaz University
                      Valida Karimova, PhD student in Linguistics and Research Assistant for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Lamiya Hajili, Master’s student in Monitoring and Evaluation in Education, participated in the "IV International Scientific Conference of Young Researchers" which was held on April 29, 2016 at Qafqaz University. The objective of the conference was to raise interest among young people in science, to bring together young researchers and scientists from various universities, centers, and institutions, and to create the opportunity for them to share their experiences with others, analyze the problems they face, discuss common problems and put forward proposals. At the conference, Valida Karimova presented an article on “Linguistic Nature of Metaphor,” and Lamiya Hajili presented “Ənənəvi və Müasir Anlamda Təhsil” (Education in Traditional and Modern Views). At the end of the conference, the participants awarded with certificates and two- volume books of conference materials.  


                      Azerbaijan’s III International Psychology Conference

                      On April23-24, 2016, Azerbaijan’s III International Psychology Conference was held on the Neftchilar campus of Khazar University. It was organized by the university’s Psychology Department and Career Center. Participants included specialists and amateurs from various regions of the country. The conference was attractive to many participants because of the tightly interwoven practical and theoretical knowledge it offers. On April 23, the conference’s official opening was held, including keynote lectures. On April 24, participants split up into workshops. Melek Karimova, Assistant Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences as well as Director of Khazar Psychological Services Center, opened the conference and gave the floor to Professor Hamlet Isaxanli, the founder of Khazar University and Chairman of its Board of Directors and Trustees. Then expert psychiatrist Ikram Rustamov gave a speech. During the conference, lectures were presented by local and Turkish guest psychologists and psychiatrists who spoke about various areas of psychology. Speakers included Professor Tuncay Ergene of Hacettepe University; Professor Mehmet Eskin of Adnan Menderes University; Professor Ceylan Das, Founder of Gestalt Association; Associate Professor Selim Gunuc of Yuzuncu il University; and Associate Professor Ramin Aliyev of Hasan Kalyoncu University. Topics discussed during the conference included test anxiety, internet addiction, stages of psychological consultation, homosexuality, and invincibility. Participants had the opportunity to gain new knowledge in the field of psychology, learn from the experience of experts, see new perspectives, make comparisons, and network with students and instructors from various universities. At the end of the conference, every participant was awarded a certificate.

                       
                      Department Chair Awarded Associate Professor Title 

                      Zulfiyya Sadigova, Head of the Department of Music and Fine Arts at Khazar University, was awarded the title of Associate Professor by an order of the Higher Attestation Commission of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic on February 29, 2016. On March 31, 2016, Z. Sadigova was given an Associate Professor certificate. We congratulate her and wish her further success.

                       
                      EMBER Project: Course on Vegetarianism Completed 

                      On March 18, 2016, participants of the course on Vegetarianism delivered by a visiting professor from the University of Łódź (Poland) were awarded with certificates for their participation in the course. The course entitled “Vegetarianism. Philosophical Aspects” provided the students with information on philosophical aspects of vegetarianism, its types, arguments for and against it, historical background, and modern approaches to this practice. The course was delivered by Dr. Janusz Ciuciura who holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Łódź in frame of the EMBER (Erasmus Mundus Broadening Educational Opportunities) project funded by the European Commission. Dr. Ciuciura will continue his cooperation with Khazar University through the EMBER project; new courses are planned for the months of April and May. The EMBER project is a consortium comprised of twenty partner higher education institutions and four associated partners from Western/Central/Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus. The focus areas of the project are the fields of economics, business, languages, and sociology. The EMBER Project at Khazar University is coordinated by Ms. Turan Jafarova, Director of the International Affairs Office.


                      Our Faculty Member's International Title Registered by Government, Publicized on News Sites 

                      Dr. Mukhtar Hajizada, Head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Khazar University, was awarded the world-recognized Jean Monnet Chair for his academic activity and professionalism in the educational field of European Union Integration which was registered by the Ministry of Justice of the Azerbaijan Republic on March 18, 2016 (with registration number 13/16/1112-A7-477/X/B1).                       Training Seminar for Khazar University instructors in ESFIDIP Project 

                      On March 16, 2016, a training seminar for Khazar University instructors was held within the framework of the “Establishment of a Foundation for the Integration of Disabled People into HEIs of Azerbaijan” (ESFIDIP) TEMPUS project. The training was led by Melek Karimova, Vice Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, who taught the participants about different types of disabilities, approaches to them, and related teaching methods. The event included an interactive discussion and a question-and-answer session. 

                      EMBER Project: Visiting Professor Delivers Course on Vegetarianism 

                      On March 11, 2016, a visiting professor from the University of Łódź (Poland) delivered the first lecture for the course entitled “Vegetarianism. Philosophical Aspects.” The course is offered to students of Khazar University during the month of March by Dr. Janusz Ciuciura of the University of Łódź in the framework of the EMBER (Erasmus Mundus Broadening Educational Opportunities) project funded by the European Commission. Dr. Ciuciura holds a PhD in Philosophy (2005, University of Łódź) and has extensive teaching experience. The EMBER project is a consortium that is comprised of twenty partner higher education institutions and four associated partners from Western/Central/Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus. The focus areas of the project are the fields of economics, business, languages, and sociology. The EMBER Project at Khazar University is coordinated by Ms. Turan Jafarova, Director of the International Affairs Office.

                      “Interacting with Difficult People” Seminar 

                      On March 9, 2016, the Khazar University Psychology Services Center held a seminar on interacting with difficult people. The training was led by Khazar University instructors Melek Kerimova and Narmin Osmanli. The topics covered included relational disorders, ego, personality types, identity, self-esteem, temperament, and effective methods of communication with “difficult” people. At the end of the event, participants asked questions and gave feedback.

                      Faculty Student’s Article on Stress 

                      On March 8, 2016, an article entitled “Problems Caused by Stress” by Narmin Guliyeva, student of the Khazar University School of Humanities and Social Sciences, was published on the islaminsesi.org website. The article was co-authored by psychologist Elnur Rustamov, Director of the Psychology and Consulting Center.                       Master Theses Defended 

                      On March 7, 2016, the following students of the Psychology Department defended their master theses: Ganira Isgandarova on “The Implementation of Psychological Assistance Programs for the Refugees of Azerbaijan, Armenia and the Daghlig Karabakh conflict” (supervisor: Elmina Kazimzade); Nurana Guliyeva on “The Problem of Autism, Symptoms, and Methods of Correction in Azerbaijan” (supervisor: PhD Eldar Shahgaldiyev); Aydan Khasmammadzade on “Psychological Disorders in Personality Caused by Psychoactive Substances” (supervisor: PhD Azad Manuchehri Lalei); and Sevinj Ahmadova on “The relationship between smoking and depression among young male students” (supervisor: PhD Laman Verdiyeva). The Committee included Dr Jabir Khalilov, Dr. Eldar Shahgaldiyev, Dr. Laman Verdiyeva, Dr. Malak Karimova, Dr Araz Manuchehri and commities secretary PhD std, Valida Karimova. The theses were assessed positively. Defense council members recommended Ganira Isgandarova’s thesis entitled “The Implementation of Psychological Assistance Programs for the Refugees of Azerbaijan, Armenia and the Daghlig Karabakh conflict” for publication.

                      Master Theses Defended 

                      On March 3, the following students of the English language and Literature Department defended their master theses: Yegana Baghirova on “Linguistic features of infinitive and infinitive construction in English (some means of their transfer into Azerbaijani language),” Nargiz Mirzayeva  on “Comparative Analysis of  P.B Shelley’s and John Keats’s Literary Creativity, Leyla Huseynli  on “Analysis of Metaphors and Similes in Azerbaijani Translation in the novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens,” and Marina Latifova on “Stylistic devices in Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and means of their interpretation into the Russian language.” After a discussion about the dissertation themes, the dissertations were positively evaluated. The Committee included Professor Baylar Hajiyev, Dr. Eldar Shahgaldiyev, Dr. Dilbar Zeynalova, Dr. Reyhan Madatova, Eynur Mehdiyev, Jamala Mammadova, Lala Gamidova, and Ilham Taghiyev. The students answered the committee members’ questions thoroughly.

                      "Khazar Psychological Counselling Center" Opening Ceremony 

                      On February 29, an opening ceremony was held for the Khazar Psychology Services Center in Khazar University. Melek Kerimova, coordinator of the center, made a presentation about the need to establish the Center and the services it will provide. She noted that the Center was founded by an order of the University President in order to provide psychological support to students and visitors. The Center will operate according to University guidelines and will coordinate seminars, courses, trainings, conferences as well as providing free psychological consultation services to university students and paid services to non-university clients. Professor Hamlet Isaxanli, the founder of Khazar University and Chairman of its Board of Directors and Trustees, also participated and spoke at the opening ceremony. Participants’ questions were also answered during the event.

                      21.12.2015 ci il tarixində Xəzər Universiteti, Humanitar və Sosial elmlər fakültəsinin dəstəyi ilə fakültənin Jurnalistika departamentinin müəllimi Rəfi Qurbanov tərəfindən “Multikulturalizm” mövzusunda seminar keçirildi. Müzakirə zamanı dünyada mövcud olan modellərlə yanaşı, Azərbaycan multikulturalizmi və dövlət siyasəti də əsas mövzulardan oldu.                       Legal Education Center Training 

                      On December 19-20, a training event was held in the Legal Education Center established within the Khazar University School of Humanities and Social Sciences on the topic of “Analysis of the Human Rights Convention in Europe” as part of a continual project of the Center. Participants in the training included students and alumni from Baku State University, the State Administration Academy, National Aviation Academy, and Khazar University as well as lawyers from several government offices and various legal firms.The training included a discussion of lawsuits in the European Court of Human Rights as well as certain laws from the Human Rights Convention and legal precedents.The trainer was Konul Gasimova, member of the European Human Rights Association and former lawyer working in the European Court of Human Rights.


                      Psixoloji Xidmət Mərkəzinin təşəbbüsü ilə Evlilik həyatına psixoloji və fiziki hazırlıq mövzusunda təlim 

                      11 dekabr 2015 ci ildə Xəzər Universiteti Psixoloji Xidmət Mərkəzinin təşəbbüsü ilə Evlilik həyatına psixoloji və fiziki hazırlıq mövzusunda Universitetinin Psixologiya kafedrasının müəlliməsi, Humanitar və Sosial elmlər fakültəsinin dekan müavini psixoloq Mələk Kərimova tərəfindən seminar təşkil edildi. Seminarda psixoloq Mələk Kərimova evlilik sistemi, bu sistemə   gənclərin hazırlığının əhəmiyyətindən, evlilik öncəsi nələrə diqqət ediləcəyi mövzüsünda çıxış edərək tələbələri də diskusiyaya cəlb etmişdir. Seminara həkimlər dəvət edilərək    evlilikdən öncə fiziki sağlamlıqda yarana biləcək xəstəliklərdən bəhs edərək tələbələri məlumatlandırdılar. Seminarda həmçinin Fəsləfə və Sosiologiya departamentinin müəllimi Mail Yaqub və digər departament müəllimləri də çıxış etdilər. Tələbələrin böyük marağına səbəb olan bu kimi tədbirlərin Xəzər Psixoloji Konsultasiya Mərkəzi tərəfindən mütəmadi keçirilməsi nəzərdə tutulur.


                      “Accessible Education, Accessible Future” Event at Khazar University 

                      On December 4-5, 2015, an event was held by the Y-PEER organization and the Khazar University Center for Students with Disabilities entitled “Accessible Education, Accessible Future.” During the training, students of the the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Zahid Huseynov, Surayya Ibrahimova and member of Y-PEER Farida Jabrayilova made presentations on ethical principles for relating to people with disabilities, guidelines for how to speak and act, and different types of disabilities. A special short film was shown and discussed. Gunel Gurbanova, student of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences as well as volunteer in the Center, made a presentation about historical figures who had disabilities. Then participants played psychological games intended to help them understand the difficulties faced by people with disabilities and how those problems can be solved. On December 5, an exhibit was held on the first floor of the university to display handicrafts made by people with disabilities. Then guests of the exhibit participated in a training and shared their life experiences with the audience. Around 20 students participated in the training, and they were awarded certificates at the end of the day.


                      Entrance exams for Doctoral Programs at Khazar University begin 

                      Entrance exams for PhD programs in 17 fields at Khazar University were held on November 23, 2015. Khazar University rector, Dr. Hassan Niknafs and the head of the departments participated in the exam. The candidates who passed the first stage will take their next exam in philosophy on November 27, 2015.


                      Guest Lecture on the Role of Azerbaijan in European Energy Supply

                      On November 23, 2015, Mr. Ilham Shaban, the Director of the Caspian Barrel Center for Oil Studies, delivered a guest lecture for undergraduate students of the Department of Political Science and International Relations of Khazar University. His main focus was on Azerbaijan's place in the European energy strategy. He spoke about the main destinations for Azerbaijani oil and gas exports, both in Europe and elsewhere in the world. He also talked about the changing market conditions, changes in oil supply and demand and its impact on prices, peculiarities of commercial gas sales and "the new oil strategy" of Azerbaijan. Mr. Shaban shared with the student’s exclusive information about the volumes of oil and condensate production in Azerbaijan by the year 2020 obtained from the companies specializing in the energy sector. The lecture was followed by a question and answer session, where questions were raised about the delivery of gas to Nakhchivan according to the swap agreement with Iran, the diversification of oil and gas export routes, peculiarities of TAP and TANAP projects, and the influence of the interstate relations on their realization as well as their influence on regional cooperation including Turkey and Georgia.


                      Welcome Party for Freshmen of School of Humanities and Social Sciences 

                      On October 28, 2015, a welcome party was held for first-year students of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Associate Professor Jabir Khalilov, Dean of the School, opened the event by greeting the students. Then Professor Hamlet Isaxanli, the founder of Khazar University and Chairman of its Board of Directors and Trustees, made a speech to congratulate the instructors and students as well as to tell them about multifaceted progress in the university’s development and to encourage them to be active in the social life of the university. Then students from each major performed various songs, dances and other numbers they had prepared for the event. This event provided an opportunity for students to display their talents as well as to get to know staff and be encouraged to be actively involved in university activities. 


                      Legal Training Center Event 

                      On October 10-11, 2015, a training was held on the topic of “Analysis of the European Convention on Human Rights” in the Legal Training Center. The training was led by Konul Gasimova, member of the European Human Rights Association and former lawyer in the European Court of Human Rights. Participants included undergraduate and graduate students from Khazar University, Baku State University, the State Administration Academy of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic, and Kiev State University, as well as lawyers working in government and in various legal corporations. Jabir Khalilov, Head of the Legal Training Center, opened the event by greeting participants and wishing them success in their future work. Then participants discussed the process of taking complaints to the European Court of Human Rights and were familiarized with certain decisions of the court as well as selections from the European Court of Human Rights. The training was planned to be held over two days, but it was so interesting for the participants that they requested that it be continued. Per the requests, a continuation of the training has been planned for the coming months

                      Bu test 1146 tələbə üzərində sınaqdan keçirilib, ilk empirik test olaraq, ABŞ-ın “Journal of Education və Training Studies” (http://redfame.com/journal/index.php/jets/index) nəşrində online dərc edilib. “İnternet asılılığımızın olub-olmadığını necə bilərik?” adlı testi türkiyəli mütəxəssislər Səlim Günüç və Murad Kayri 2010-cu ildə birlikdə hazırlayıblar. Tədqiqatda eyni zamanda Azərbaycan tələbələri arasında internet asılılığının hansı vəziyyətdə olduğu müəyyən edilib: “Nəticələrə görə, tələbələrin 48.1% internet asılılığı olan, 51.9% internet asılılığı olmayan qrup kimi qarşımıza çıxmaqdadır.  Bu, profilaktik tədbirlərin həyata keçirilməsinin zərurətini ortaya qoyur”. Bu tədqiqat Azərbaycan psixoloqlarının gələcəkdə görəcəyi tədbirlər və yeni elmi işlər üçün böyük əhəmiyyət kəsb edir.                       Master Defence Successes 

                      On September 21, there were held Master thesis defences by the the English language and Literature Department. The following students defended their Master theses. Rajab Rajabov’s thesis was Translation of phraseological units in the novel “ Jenny Gerhardt” by T. Dreiser. Yegane Aghaeva’s thesis wasPerspectives on Valency  in Azerbaijani and English languages. A comparative approach to strategies for passivization and causation. Arzu Aziziova’s thesis was Socio-literary analysis of Clyde Griffiths as a protagonist image in Theodore Dreiser’s novel “An American Tragedy”. Ulkar Guliyeva’s thesis was The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald: Stylistic devices and their interpretation into the Azerbaijani language. Gunel Rustamova’s thesis was The problem of war and peace in Ernest Miller Hemingway’s literary works. ValiDa Karimova's thesis was Metaphor in political discourse. The head of the Committee was Baylar Hajiyev, the members of the committee were Eldar Shahgaldiyev, Irada Samadova, Dilbar Zeynalova, Reyhan Madatova, Gulnar Abasova, Jamala Mammadova. M.A. students answered the committee members’ questions during the defence. Upon the whole, thesis defence passed successfully. 

                          

                      SPRING-2015

                      Conference on "Religions and Secularities in the Caucasus: New Configuration," which took place in Tbilisi, Georgia, at the Ilia University 

                      From 1 to 3 June 2015, Associate Professor of the Department of Political Science and International Relations, Dr Rashad Huseynov participated at the conference on "Religions and Secularities in the Caucasus: New Configuration," which took place in Tbilisi, Georgia, at the Ilia University.The conference, which was organized as part of the EU-supported CASCADE project in collaboration with the ISSICEU project, was dedicated to the reconfiguration of religions and secularism in both North and South Caucasus in more than two decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union.  Dr Huseynov made a presentation on "the role of religious education in strengthening secular traditions in Azerbaijan." He spoke about the current state of religious education in the country, relevant legislation, international experience and existing challenges to religious education at public schools, and made recommendations on possible ways to overcome those challenges. After his presentation, Dr Huseynov answered the questions of conference participants.


                      The Employee of School of Humanities and Social Sciences participated on the "5th International Symposium of Policies and Issues on Teacher Education" 

                      This year the "5th International Symposium of Policies and Issues on Teacher Education" was organized on 30 April-02 May, 2015 in Azerbaijan by the Faculty of Education of Hacettepe University, Azerbaijan State Pedagogy University and the Faculty of Pedagogy of Gafqaz University. At Symposium, the Vice-Dean of School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Malak Karimova participated. At Symposium modern education future, education reform, a wide range of problems in this field discussed and also detailed discussions were held on the work to be done in the future.

                       

                      The Employees of School of Humanities and Social Sciences participated on the III International Scientific Conference of Young Researchers Devoted to the 92nd Anniversary of Azerbaijani National Leader Heydar Aliyev, Aprel 17-18, 2015 

                      The Vice-Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences Malak Karimova and the Dean assistant ValiDa Karimova participated on the "III International Scientific Conference of Young Researchers" which was held on April 17-18, 2015. The conference aims were to get young people more interested in science, to bring together young researchers and scientists from various universities, centers, and institutions, to share their experiences with others, to analyze the problems they face, to discuss the common problems and provide opportunity to put forward proposals. Research Track. "III International Scientific Conference of Young Researchers" invites authors to submit their papers in the following research areas:

                      At the Conference Malak Karimova performed with the thesis “Internet Addiction and ways to measure”. At the end of the conference the participants awarded with certificates.
                       

                      “Depression and Suicide” Writing Competition results 

                      On April 9, 2015, an awards ceremony was held for the “Depression and Suicide” creative writing contest held by the Khazar University Psychology and Consultation Center in collaboration with “Düşüncə” (Thought) Journal. 100 essays were submitted to the contest, and 36 of them were chosen. They were checked by professional specialists in the field. Four individuals were chosen as winners. One of them, Samir Imanov, who is also disabled, was awarded first prize. Then specialists gave information about suicide and depression from psychological, legal and philosophical perspectives. Speeches were made by Elnur Rustemov, family psychologist, Director of the Psychology and Consultation Center, and ANAS researcher; Akif Alizada, lawyer; and Mail Yagub, Head of the Philosophy department. At the end of the event, Prof. Hamlet Isaxanli, founder of Khazar University and Chairman of its Board of Directors and Trustees, spoke about the contest. Ulker Isayeva, Head of the Psychology Department, also spoke at the closing of the ceremony.

                      Training in Legal Education Center 

                      On March 13-15, 2015, the first training event of the new academic year was held at the Khazar University Legal Education Center, established three years ago. The topic of the training was “Human Rights Convention in Europe: General Analysis.” Participants included students majoring in law and international relations from Khazar University, Baku State University, National Aviation Academy, Azerbaijan State Oil Academy and the State Administration Academy of the President of Azerbaijan Republic. The training was led by Konul Gasimova, member of the European Human Rights Association and former lawyer working in the European Court of Human Rights. She analyzed and discussed themes related to Defense of Human Rights and Basic Freedoms according to the European Convention, including “Faithfulness to the Convention” (Section 6), “Signature and Ratification” (Section 7), and “Entry into Force” (Section 10). At the end of the training, participants were given certificates.   

                      Exhibition of Student Art 

                      On December 24-26, a private exhibition of the works of Pari Gazibeyova, first-year student of Khazar University’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences, was held in the university exhibition hall. Over 20 of Pari’s works were displayed in the exhibition, which was very interesting to students and instructors alike. A decision was made to hold an exhibition of Pari Gazibeyova’s future art as well.

                       
                      The Presetation of Certificates to the Participants of “English Language Methodology” and Thesis-Writing for MA Students Workshop 

                      On December 12 there was held the ceremony of presentation of certificates which was held 3 months at Khazar University with the guests invited from the US Embassy. The teachers of the Department of English Language and Literature, MA students from School of Humanities and Social Sciences also participated alongside with the guests in the ceremony. The ceremony was opened by the trainer of the seminar “English Language Methodology Workshop” Mary Kay Seales. The participants of the ceremony spoke highly about Mary Kay Seales, and the experience and best practices that they had learned during the seminar. The ceremony went on with the speeches of Kelly Cullum, from the department of Cultural Affairs and Zulfiya Shirinova, English Language program coordinator of the US Embassy.  They gave a lot of information about the programs of the US Embassy available for the teachers. At the end the participants were awarded with the certificates.

                      Election for Student Council President 

                      On December 5, an election was held to choose the Khazar University Student Union President. Three candidates competed in the election. According to the results of the voting, Mirzeaga Samadov, third year student of the School of Humanities and Social Science, was elected president of the Student Union with 408 votes. Aziza Jafarly, second year student of the School of Economics and Management, was elected vice president with 185 votes. Professor Hamlet Isaxanli, Founder of Khazar University and Chairman of the Board of Directors and Trustees, congratulated our students who were selected to these important public positions. He wished them success and effective service as part of the Student Council.   

                      Routine Training of Legal Education Center 

                      The Legal Education Center affiliated at Khazar University began its training on “European Human Rights Court: procedures for cases and guaranteed rights”  on October 23 and completed it on October 26.Participants in the training included students majoring in Law and International Relations at Khazar University, Baku State University, the National Aviation Academy, Azerbaijan State Oil Academy, and State Administration Academy of the President of the Azerbaijani Republic.The training was led by Konul Gasimova, member of the European Human Rights Association and former lawyer working in the European Court of Human Rights. Topics of “Right to live,” “Right to dignity of personal life and family life,” “freedoms of thought, conscience and religion,” and “conditions for acceptance” according to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms were discussed and analyzed in detail. The training concluded with the presentation of certificates.   

                      Legal Education Center training courses continue 

                      The Khazar University Legal Education Center has been in operation for two years. It began its training courses for the current academic year with a training event on October 23rd. Participants in the training included students from Baku State University, the National Aviation Academy, Azerbaijan State Oil Academy, State Administration Academy of the President of the Azerbaijani Republic, and Khazar University’s own Law and International Relations majors.The training, which is on the topic of “European Human Rights Court: procedures for cases and guaranteed rights,” will continue for three days. Detailed training is given on the topics of “Right to live,” “Right to dignity of personal life and family life,” “freedoms of thought, conscience and religion,” “conditions for acceptance” according to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.The training was led by Konul Gasimova, member of the European Human Rights Association and former lawyer working in the European Court of Human Rights.   

                      Legal Education Center conducts weekly training courses 

                      On June 28, a weekly training on Advocacy Skills was conducted at Khazar University Legal Education Center. Arzu Aliyeva, a member of Azerbaijan Bar Association, talked about Claim Preparation for Appeal and Cassation Instances on Civil Cases. During the training, young lawyers worked on legal documents and developed skills in preparation of claims. 

                      Final Meeting of Staff-Student Consultative Committee of the Department of Political Science and International Relations 

                      On 24 June 2014, the Staff-Student Consultative Committee of the Department of Political Science and International Relations held its final meeting for the current 2013-2014 academic year. Dr. Mukhtar Hajizada, the Head of the Department, convened and chaired the meeting. Following the approval of the minutes from the previous meeting of the Committee, the elected student representatives of the Committee discussed the progress made on the points raised in the previous meeting. Kamran Mammadov, Anar Qurbanov, Mirzeaga Samadov, Seda Hasanova and Gunel Mammadova suggested new agenda items which were discussed in an open and thorough manner. In conclusion, the student representatives expressed their satisfaction for the opportunity to have a structured forum to discuss their concerns with regard to teaching, learning and student support issues on the departmental level. Dr. Hajizada thanked them for their contribution to the Committee and acknowledged their university service which lasted for one academic year. The new members of the Committee will be elected by the student body of the university in the 2014-2015 academic year.   

                      Master Students Defend Theses 

                      On June 18, 2014, master’s students of Khazar University School of Humanities and Social Sciences Xandra Marshall and Sehon Marshall defended their theses on the following topics:1.      Xandra Marshall – “The Impact of Globalization in the culture of Saint Vincent and Grenadines” (supervisor Kanan Allahverdiyev);2.      Sehon Marshall – “Regionalism in the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States” (supervisor Kanan Allahverdiyev).The Defense Council approved both works and recommended them to the university’s Academic Council for further endorsement.    

                      Khazar Students at Event in Sweden 

                      On June 1-9, a cultural event for youth took place in Viksjöfors, Sweden as part of the European Union Youth in Action program. Young adults from Azerbaijan, Sweden, Belarus, Cyprus, Latvia, Slovakia, the Ukraine, and Armenia participated. The group representing the Azerbaijan Republic at the event was organized by the Legal Analysis and Research Public Union and included the following Khazar University students: Miragha Baghirov, Rugangiz Asgarova, and Isfandiyar Safarov from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences; and Musa Abdullayev from the School of Economics and Management. The students performed national dances and musical numbers at the event, demonstrating Azerbaijani culture to the other participants. Helena Ehrstand, the project leader, and Matilda Norling Person, the head coordinator, said that they appreciated the performances of the Azerbaijani representatives. Helena Ehrstand said, “I have been coordinating this project for several years now, but I have never seen such a lively music and dance performance as that of the Azerbaijani representatives. This is a great novelty for us. I hope that we will be able to continue our partnership with you.” At the end of the event, the students were awarded certificates.    

                      Khazar University Legal Education Center holds Weekly Training Courses 

                      On May 31, a training on Advocacy Skills was conducted at Khazar University Legal Education Center. Natavan Rustamova, a member of Azerbaijan Bar Association, talked about Client interviewing and Counseling as practical skills of an attorney. The training session was aimed at improving practical skills of young lawyers. The course provided participants with a basic model for interviewing and counseling, and exposed them to the kinds of problems and ethical issues that can arise in counseling clients. Young lawyers also had an opportunity to work on cases.


                      Khazar University Legal Education Center Launches Advocacy Skills training 

                      On May 24, the first training on Advocacy Skills was conducted at Khazar University Legal Education Center. Akif Alizade, lecturer at Khazar University and a member of Azerbaijan Bar Association, talked about the General Rules and Legal Basis of Advocacy activity in Azerbaijan.This time, 40 applicants applied for the program.  Given the quality of applications, the process of selecting a limited number of lawyers was difficult. As a result of the two-stage selection process (application and interview), 9 applications were selected based on their academic and practical qualifications. The program will continue for several months and is free. During the program the lawyers will learn skills both theoretically, through readings and discussions, and experientially, through demonstrations, exercises, stimulations, and writing assignments. 

                      Roundtable on Azerbaijan and Islam in an Era of Globalization 

                      The Department of Political Science and International Relations at Khazar University, in collaboration with the Baku office of the French Institute of Anatolian Studies (IFEA), organized a roundtable to discuss Azerbaijan and Islam in an Era of Globalization. Dr. Mukhtar Hajizada, who chaired the event, gave an opening speech in which he mentioned the role of religion in Azerbaijan and how it had an impact on the history, culture and lifestyle of the country. The first speaker, Dr. Elnura Azizova of Khazar University, gave a presentation on the arrival of Islam in Azerbaijan in the 7th century. Dr. Adeline Braux, a researcher at the French Institute of Anatolian Studies, shared her research findings on the religious life of the Azerbaijani community in Moscow. Dr. Mohamed-Ali Adraoui, who is a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence, spoke about political Islam in the contemporary world and informed the audience about Salafi trends. Dr. Anar Valiev, the dean of the School of Public and International Affairs at ADA University, talked about the role of Islam in Azerbaijan in the period after the country regained its independence. After the question and answer session, a discussion was carried out over tea and refreshments encouraging the audience to interact directly with the speakers.


                      64th Anniversary of Europe Day Celebrated 

                      The Department of Political Science and International Relations at Khazar University, in collaboration with the Delegation of the European Union to Azerbaijan, organized an event to celebrate Europe Day. This day, also known as Schuman Day, is observed across Europe to celebrate the historic Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950. At the event, Dr. Olaf Heidelbach, the project manager at the Delegation, first delivered a presentation on the origins of the European Union, its foundation and its function today. Following the presentation, a discussion was held on a wide range of issues relating to the European integration as well as European Union- Azerbaijan relations which brought together both staff and the student body of the university.


                      "Judaism: Beliefs and Worldview" 

                      On May 8, as organized by the Department of Eastern Languages ​​and Religious Studies of Khazar University, an event entitled” Judaism: beliefs and worldview" was held as part of the "experience of living together" series. Opening the event, Head of the Department Dr. Elnura Azizova noted that various programs to promote and study of world religions have been implemented at Khazar University in order to recognize and understand diversity. Then, students of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences gave information about the structure of Judaism, faith, worship, morality, and the public. Chairman of the Ashkenazi Jewish community in Azerbaijan, Ravvin Shneor, spoke about the history of Judaism and the Jewish community to the students, and answered students’ questions related to Judaism.

                      "Christianity: Belief and Worldview" Event
                       

                      On May 1, as organized by the Khazar University Department of Eastern Languages and Religious Studies, an event in the "Experience of Living Together" series entitled "Christianity: belief and worldview" was held.At the opening of the event, Dr. Elnura Azizova, head of the department, said that Azerbaijan is a region where Christians and members of other religions have lived together throughout history, and this important tradition continues here.Then, students of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences made presentations about the establishment, dissemination, faith, worship and moral system of Christianity and its current state. Robert Mobili, Albanian-Udi community leader, presented a slide show about the history and current state of the Albanian-Udi Church, which is the oldest representative of Christianity. At the end of the event, students’ questions about Christianity and the Albanian-Udi church were answered.


                      Legal Education Center Organizes Mock Trial 

                      4-month training courses on Human Rights have been completed at Khazar University Legal Education Center, established with the support of Azerbaijan Lawyers Confederation (ALC) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) within the framework of the “Azerbaijan Rights Consortium” project. On April 12, the participants of the “Human Rights” training course simulated a mock trial on a Human Rights under the supervision of Akif Alizade, Khazar University lecturer and a member of Azerbaijan Bar Association.In accordance with the agenda, the court simulation started with the opening statements of the parties, victim testimony, and witness presentation. It concluded with closing arguments, jury deliberation, verdict and judgement. The jury was composed of 10 persons including students, Legal Education Center staff and a representative from ALC.At the end, participants held discussions at the Legal Education Center and expressed their gratitude to Khazar University, especially to the Center staff, for organizing the event.   

                      Seminar on "Human Rights, Freedom of Religion and Islam" 

                      On March 31, as organized by the Department of Eastern Languages ​​and Religious Studies, a seminar on "Human rights, freedom of religion and Islam" was held at Khazar University. Dr.  Elnura Azizova, head of the department, opened the event, stating that the issue of human rights and religious freedom has been discussed in a variety of different domains in the context of Islam in recent years and is becoming increasingly more important.Then Elnura Azizova reported on "Analysis of the concept of freedom of religion in Islamic human rights declarations,” Dr. Ali Bulut (Suleyman Demirel University, Turkey) reported on "Overview of the Qur'an in the context of human rights,” Dr. Elmin Aliyev (Khazar University) reported on "Freedom of thought in Islam in the context of science and philosophy," and  theologian Salih Kazımov (BSU) reported on "The attitude of Islam toward the members of other religions.” After the lectures, reports were discussed with the participation of employees of the university Dr. Mayıl Yagubov, Jabir Mammadov, Dr. Zivar Huseynova, and students.

The participants of the training were students from Khazar University, Baku State University, National Aviation Academy and the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. During the training, Arif Aliyev, Chairman of the “New Generation” The Union of Journalists, talked about “Freedom of Expression and Media Rights”.

During the training, Mehriban Zeynalova, Chairman of the “Clean World” Social Cohesion, talked about “Women’s Rights”.


                      Khazar Student Receives Certificate from White House 

                      On March 5th, 2014, Miragha Baghirov, first-year student of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences took first place in the "Portrait of Khojaly Massacre” contest and received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Administration of International Relations of the White House, Washington, DC.M. Baghirov created a picture which showed a one-year-old child saying "This year I might celebrate my 22nd birthday. But I'm not here.” For several hours, this picture was shown in the news feed of the White House website. Khazar University appreciates Miragha Baghirov’s patriotism and congratulates him for this success.

During the training, Nazir Guliyev, Chairman of the “World of Law” Legal Promotion Public Union, talked about Children’s Rights.

                      On February 22, weekly training courses were held at Khazar University Legal Education Center, established with the support of Azerbaijan Lawyers Confederation and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) within the “Azerbaijan Rights Consortium” project. The center provides training courses on Human Rights to law students and prepares young lawyers who wish to participate in Bar Admission Exams. The participants of the training are students from Khazar University, Baku State University, National Aviation Academy and the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. During the training, Ramil Iskandarli, Chief of Party at “Azerbaijan Rights Consortium” project, led a training on Human Rights and Business.


                      Legal Education Center Conducted Training on Anti- Corruption Legislation and Human Rights 

                      On February 9, Khazar University Legal Education Center conducted a 1-day training course on Anti-Corruption Legislation and Human Rights.  During the training, the legal definition of corruption, its causes and consequences were discussed. Anti-Corruption legislation in Azerbaijan and its implementation as well as International Organizations working on transparency issues were introduced in the training. The participants were also given an opportunity to analyze cases on best international practices of various countries. The participants of the training were students of Khazar University, National Aviation Academy, the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Police Academy and legal practitioners. The training was led by Seljan Mammadli, who earned her LL.M. degree from Ohio Northern University, USA, in 2005. She works as a legal counsel at Karasu Operating Company (Global Energy Azerbaijan). She is also a PhD student at Baku State University.At the end of the training, the participants were awarded certificates.

                      Legal Education Center Conducts Seminar 

                      On February 6, Khazar University Legal Education Center organized a seminar on the Procedure of the European Court of Human Rights. Students of Khazar University, Baku State University, and the Aviation Academy attended the seminar. The event was led by Konul Gasimova, expert on European Human Rights. Konul Gasimova previously worked in the European Court of Human Rights as a lawyer.

                      Legal Education Center conducts training on Legal Writing and Analysis 

                      On February 1-2, Khazar University Legal Education Center conducted a 2-day training course on Legal Writing and Analysis.  The aim of the training was to develop key lawyering skills in law students and young lawyers such as analyzing facts, objective and persuasive legal writing, and drafting legal documents.
                      The training was led by Altay Mustafayev, who earned his LL.M. degree from the University of Washington School of Law (Seattle, USA) within the Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program in 2005. He is of counsel in Baker & McKenzie's Baku office. He is also a member of both the Collegium of Advocates in Azerbaijan and New York Bar Association.At the end of the training, the participants were awarded certificates.

                      Legal Education Center hosts a judge of the Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan 

                      On January 18, weekly training courses were held at Khazar University Legal Education Center, established with the support of Azerbaijan Lawyers Confederation and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) within the “Azerbaijan Rights Consortium” project. The center provides training courses on Human Rights to law students and prepares young lawyers who wish to participate in Bar Admission Exams.  The participants of the training are students from Khazar University, Baku State University, National Aviation Academy and the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. During the training, Jeyhun Garajayev, a judge of the Constitutional Court, delivered a lecture on “Court and constitutional control mechanism in the implementation of Human Rights.”

                      Legal Education Center Hosts Disability Law Expert 

                      On January 11, weekly training courses were held at Khazar University Legal Education Center, established with the support of Azerbaijan Lawyers Confederation and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) within the “Azerbaijan Rights Consortium” project. The center provides training courses on Human Rights to law students and prepares young lawyers who wish to participate in Bar Admission Exams. The participants of the training are students from Khazar University, Baku State University, National Aviation Academy and the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. During the training, Elnur Eyvazov, expert on Disability Rights, delivered a lecture on “Implementation Mechanism of Disability Rights.” Elnur Eyvazov is a blind lawyer who earned three master's degrees in law from the prestigious Cambridge, Oxford and Columbia universities.  He worked for J.P. Morgan Chase investment bank. He currently works as a lecturer at Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy, Baku State University and Qafqaz University.

                      On December 20, Khazar University Legal Education Center organized a training course on the Procedure of the European Court of Human Rights. Students of Khazar University, Baku State University, and the Aviation Academy attended the training. The training was led by Konul Gasimova, expert on European Human Rights. At the end of the training, the students were awarded certificates.


                      Master's students successfully defend theses  

                      On December 18, 2013, master’s student of Khazar University, Azade Yektaeikar, defended a thesis on “Understanding of TED as an Alternative Media” under the supervision of Jabir Mammadov, and Heider Shia Albarrak defended a thesis on “The role of the New Iraq in Regional Security and Economic Development” under the supervision of Dr. Rashad Huseynov. The theses were approved by the committee members.


                      The Legal Education Center launches weekly training courses on Human Rights

                      On November 23, weekly training courses on Human Rights were launched at Khazar University Legal Education center, established with the support of Azerbaijan Lawyers Confederation and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) within the “Azerbaijan Rights Consortium” project. The center provides training courses on Human Rights to law students and prepares young lawyers who wish to participate in Bar Admission Exams. The training courses will continue for 4 months and will be led by the Human Rights professionals. The participants of the training are students from Khazar University, Baku State University, National Aviation Academy and the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Making an opening speech, Jabir Khalilov, Head of the Legal Education Center, gave information about the project and activities of the center. Leyla Niyazova, coordinator of the Center, discussed students’ needs and expectations for the course. During the training course, Aynur Jafarova (Project officer at Council of Europe and Khazar University instructor) delivered a lecture on “Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms."


                      Khazar University Legal Education Center Coordinator Attends Training 

                      On November 18-22, Leyla Niyazova, Coordinator of the Legal Education Center, attended a training organized by USAID’s Building Local Capacity for Development Project (BLCD). The training combined instructional sessions with practical application and covered Program Evaluation, Administration, and Financial Management sessions. The training was led by Rebecca Sherwood, US expert of Chemonics International, Inc, and was held in their Baku office.  A number of Civil Society Organizations attended the training to increase their organizational and technical capacity. BLCD is a four-year project whose purpose is to strengthen the organizational and technical capacities of key civil society organizations (CSOs), develop CSO Resource Centers, and improve legal and regulatory frameworks to enhance the development and sustainability of CSOs.

                      On October 17, Khazar University Legal Education Center jointly with Francebook Education Center organized a training course on the Procedure at the European Court of the Human Rights. Students of Khazar University, Baku State University, and Aviation Academy attended the training. The training was led by Konul Gasimova, expert on European Human Rights. At the end of the training, the students were awarded certificates.

                      Weekly training courses at Legal Education Center 

                      On June 8, weekly training courses were conducted at the Legal Education Center affiliated with the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, established with the support of Azerbaijan Lawyers Confederation (ALC) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) within the “Azerbaijan Rights Consortium” project.The first training session was presented by the chairman of ALC, MP Ali Huseynli on the topic of “Suggestions, problems, discussions and analysis relating to the death penalty” for students of the Human Rights course and young lawyers who wish to participate in Bar Admission Exams. During the training, Ali Huseynli led discussions on the pros and cons of the death penalty.Altay Mustafayev, member of  Azerbaijan Bar Association and New York State Bar Association, spoke on “Multiplicity of Crimes in Criminal Law” and led another session on the same day.   

                      Legal Education Center Awards Certificates 

                      The 4-month training courses have been completed at Khazar University Legal Education Center, which was established with the support of Azerbaijan Lawyers Confederation (ALC) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) within the framework of the “Azerbaijan Rights Consortium” (ARC) project. On September 28, participants of the “Human Rights” training courses were awarded certificates. Making an opening speech, Jabir Khalilov, Head of the Legal Education Center, gave information about the activities of the center and congratulated the graduates on their accomplishments. Other presentations at the event were made by Nadir Adilov, Advisor to the Chair of the “ASAN service,” State Agency for Public Service and Social Innovations under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan; Ramil Iskandarli, Chief of the ARC Party; and students.   

                      Legal Education Center Organizes Mock Trial

On July 3, the participants of the “Human Rights“ and “Bar Exam Preparation” training courses simulated a mock trial under the supervision of Khazar University lecturer Akif Alizade.In accordance with the agenda, the court simulation started with the opening statements of the parties (prosecutor/defender), followed by the testimony of the accused, direct and cross-examinations, and witness presentation. It concluded with closing arguments, jury deliberation, verdict and sentencing.The jury was composed of 8 persons including both academic and administrative staff of Khazar University as well as a representative from ALC.At the end, participants expressed their gratitude to Khazar University, especially to the Legal Education Center staff, for organizing the event  http://www.huquq.tv/az/read/95.html


                      Meeting with Ali Huseynli, Chairman of the Law Policy and State Building Committee of Azerbaijani Parliament 

                      On June 8, Chairman of the law policy and state building committee of the Azerbaijani Parliament, Ali Huseynli, met with the founder of Khazar University and Chairman of its Board of Directors and Trustees, Prof. Hamlet Isaxanli, and head of the Legal Education Center, Jabir Khalilov. At the event, the participants discussed the Legal Education Center established with the support of Azerbaijan Lawyers Confederation and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) within the “Azerbaijan Rights Consortium” project at Khazar University. Ali Huseynli expressed his gratitude to Khazar University for its support, and at the same time he praised the work of the Legal Education Center for successful implementation of the project. He also emphasized the necessity of continuing the teaching of law at Khazar University and expressed confidence about creating opportunities for the continuation and expansion of cooperation in the development and implementation of similar projects in the future.


                      Routine Weekly Training at Legal Education Center 

                      Routine weekly training sessions at Khazar University Legal Education Center ended on June 1. Training was conducted on "Human Rights" and "Bar exam preparation.” International Non-Profit Legal Network specialist Mohammed Guluzadeh led a "Human Rights" training course on "Freedom of Association,” and a judge of Baku city Administrative Court № 2, Farayil Mammadov, led a “Bar exam preparation" training course on "Civil Process."

                      Psychology Students’ Gabala Trip 

                      On May 26th, students majoring in Psychology in the Khazar University School of Humanities and Social Sciences went on a one-day trip to Gabala. During the trip, they visited the “Seven Beauties” waterfall, Nohur Lake and the Gabaland Amusement Park. The Dean of the School, Jabir Khalilov, the Dean’s Assistant Valida Karimova and philosophy instructor Mail Yagubov also participated in the trip.


                      Event Dedicated to Anniversary of the Occupation of Lachin 

                      On May 14, as organized by 2nd year student of School of Humanities and Social Sciences of Khazar University, Orkhan Musabeyli, and 2nd year student of Azerbaijan Architecture and Construction University, Muradkhan Bandaliyev, an event dedicated to the anniversary of the occupation of Lachin was held at Khazar University.  M. Bandaliyev had also prepared a picture entitled "Lachin mirror.” The event was opened with the playing of the national anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Then the Lachin martyrs were remembered in a moment of silence.Director of Public Relations and Media of Khazar University, Alovsat Amirbeyli, made a presentation about events associated with the occupation of Lachin. 2nd year student of Khazar University, E. Feyzullayev, recited poetry. Orkhan Musabeyli made a unique monologue performance. Then a video depicting the events of Lachin was shown.


                      Conference on "Heydar Aliyev's Role in the Formation of Azerbaijani Youth" 

                      On May 10, with the participation of students, a conference on  "Heydar Aliyev's role in the formation of Azerbaijani youth" which was dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the national leader Heydar Aliyev was held at Khazar University.  The conference was opened by Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Jabir Khalilov. Then presentations were made with videos reflecting the great leader's life, work and management policies by history instructor of the university, PhD in Political Science, Khagan Balayev; second year student majoring in  Journalism, Ceyran Jafarli; and first and second year students majoring in Psychology, Aydan Ibragimova, Aygül Rustamova and Khadija Ashurova. Vice President of the university, Rafig Ahmadov, and other faculty and staff members also participated in the event.


                      Faculty Students Attend Event on EU-Azerbaijan Relations 

                      Ayten Shadlinskaya, Director of the Office of International Students and Scholars, and Maia Mukhuradze, Assistant Vice President for International Affairs, and 17 students from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences participated in an event dedicated to EU-Azerbaijan Relations held at Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy. H.E. Stefan Fule, European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy of the European Commission, was hosted by ADA to discuss issues related to EU-Azerbaijan Relations. In the end of the event, H.E. Stefan Fule answered students’ questions.


                      Open Lesson at Khazar University

                      Dilbar Zeynalova, Assistant Professor at the Khazar University School of Humanities and Social Sciences, held an open lesson on "Azerbaijani Literature of the Republic period:  Ahmad Javad - Republican poet.” The lesson started with the singing of the National Anthem of the Azerbaijan Republic, which Uzeir Hajibayli composed to the words of Ahmad Javad, and continued with videos that had been made by students. The subject was thoroughly covered by the students’ presentations and interesting comments of the teacher. The Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Associate Professor Jabir Khalilov, and Head of the Department of Azerbaijani Language and Literature, Associate Professor Vurghun Eyyub, also attended the lesson. The lesson was then discussed with the teacher and appraised as a highly developed model lesson.   

                      Presentation on Human Trafficking 

                      On April 30, with the support of the Migration Competence Center and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a presentation was made on “Solidifying awareness on human trafficking through education” to the students of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Saltanat Mammadova, IOM Program Coordinator, made opening remarks and informed students about the activities of the organization and projects carried out under its auspices. Mehriban Zeynalova, Head of the Clean World Public Union for Aid to Women, spoke on causes of human trafficking, its forms and means of fighting against it. At the end of the event, students watched a movie on raising awareness for the fight against human trafficking and asked questions.


                      Training on "Practical and Applied Methods of Psycho-analysis" 

                      On April 26, Khazar University Career Center held a training event on "Practical and Applied Methods of Psychoanalysis" for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences students majoring in psychology. The training was led by founder and head of Global Training and Consultation Company, Kenan Rahimov. Students were informed about psychoanalysis, its application methods, the road leading from theory to conclusions, etc. Then students' questions were answered. After the training, students were informed about job opportunities at the company.


                      Weekly Training Courses at Legal Education Center 

                      On April 13, weekly training courses were conducted at Khazar University Legal Education Center, established with the support of Azerbaijan Lawyers Confederation and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) within the “Azerbaijan Rights Consortium” project.  The center provides training courses on Human Rights to law students and prepares young lawyers who wish to participate in Bar Admission Exams. The participants of the Human Rights training were Law School students from Baku State University, National Aviation Academy and the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. During the training courses, Saadat Novruzova (Senior Advisor of the Protection of Human Rights Sector of the Department for Coordination of Law Enforcement Agencies of the Administration of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Khazar University instructor) delivered a lecture on “An analysis of the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights against the Azerbaijan Republic.”   

                      Official Opening Ceremony of Legal Education Center Affiliated with Khazar University was Held 

                      The Azerbaijan Lawyers Confederation (ALC), in accordance with their Partnership Agreement with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is implementing the Azerbaijan Rights Consortium (ARC) project. The goal of the Azerbaijan Rights Consortium Project (ARC) is to increase the effectiveness of civil society and legal professionals to better defend the rights and interests of citizens and to improve the rule of law. The objectives of the project are development of broader-based Azerbaijani constituencies more actively promoting reforms that safeguard citizens’ rights and improved capacity of legal professionals to better apply laws and assist their clients. Strategic partners of the project are Citizens’ Labor Rights Protection League and Constitution Research Fund. Along with other activities, to increase the professional capacities of law students and young lawyers, a Legal Education Center was established at Khazar University within the project. This year the center plans to provide training courses in human rights for law students and Bar Exam preparation courses for young lawyers. The first training course within this project was started in the third week of March and will continue until the end of June of this year. On April 6, the official opening ceremony of the Legal Education Center was held at Khazar University. Representatives of various government agencies, non-governmental organizations, international organizations and other agencies, university administration and students participated in the event. Making an opening speech, Jabir Khalilov, Head of the Legal Education Center, gave information about the organization of the center and its activities. Then Chairman of ALC, MP Ali Huseynli, noted that the project and the course will be important in the development of professional lawyers. The founder of Khazar University and chairman of its Board of Directors and Trustees, Professor Hamlet Isaxanli, talked about the necessity of the establishment of the center and the importance of students to master the practical skills it will offer.Other presentations at the event were made by Ronald Glass, Director of the Office of Democracy and Governance at USAID Azerbaijan; Saadat Yusifova, Senior Advisor, Department for Coordination of Law Enforcement Agencies, Administration of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan; Jeyhun Garajayev, Judge of the Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan Republic;  Alimammad Nuriyev, President of the Constitution Research Fund; Sahib Mammadov, Chairman of  Citizens’ Labor Rights Protection League; Akif Alizadeh, a member of the Bar Association and instructor of Khazar University. In the end, Ronald Glass had a talk with students about organizing courses. After the event, a representative of the USAID Baku office, Aynur Yusifova, participated in some of the LEC training with the aim of monitoring.

                      Khazar University Legal Education Center Launches First Training Courses 

                      On March 16, the first training courses were conducted at Khazar University Legal Education Center, established with the support of Azerbaijan Lawyers Confederation and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) within the “Azerbaijan Rights Consortium”.   During the first training course, Khazar University instructor Aynur Jafarova delivered a lecture to the law school students on “Basic human rights and freedoms,” and the lawyer of the project and member of the Bar Association, Sima Yagubova, spoke on “Professional legal ethics” before the law school graduates. By the end of the course, 25 law students will receive training for 3 months in human rights, and 9 law graduates will be trained in preparation for Bar Exams.                       Representatives of Nakhchivan Private University Visit Khazar 

                      On February 8, the president of Nakhchivan Private University, Ismail Aliyev, Head of International Relations Department, Gulshan Orujova, Head of Department of Education, Anar Abuzerli, Head of Public Relations Department, Gulnara Azizaliyeva, Head of Electronic Control Department, Rashad Abbasov, and Instructor of Department of Foreign Languages, Anar Yagubov, met with the founder of Khazar University and chairman of its Board of Directors and Trustees, Prof. Hamlet Isaxanli. Also participating in the meeting were Vice Presidents of Khazar University Muhammad Nuriyev and Rafig Ahmadov; Director of Public Relations and Media, Alovsat Amirbeyli; Dean of the School of Education, Elza Semedli; Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Jabir Khalilov; and Assistant to the Vice President of International Relations, Maia Mukhuradze.At the meeting, they discussed cooperation issues between the two universities. At the end of the meeting, a contract was signed between the two universities about the exchange of academic and administrative staff, student exchange, and conducting scientific events.


                      Roundtable with Representatives of Canadian University 

                      On January 18, 2013, a meeting was held at Khazar University with representatives of Waterloo University. Professor Hamlet Isaxanli, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Trustees; Professor Mahammad Nuriyev, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Eldar Shahgaldiyev, Head of the Division of Graduate Studies and Research; Alovsat Amirbayli, Leyla Muradkhanli, Head of the Computer Science department, Coordinator of Public Relations and Media; Calvin Tiessen, Head of the Department of English Language and Literature; Daniel Paul, Khazar University instructor; Richard Rousseau, Head of the Department of Political Sciences; Baba Bayramli, Coordinator of the Department of Political Sciences; Jabir Khalilov, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences; Jabir Mammadli, Coordinator of the Department of Journalism; and PhD students of Khazar University participated in the meeting. Topics such as “Screening Azerbaijan: Cinema’s role in Constructing and Exporting National Identity,” “Female Leadership in Azerbaijan: Comparing women’s roles in refugee and IDP communities and mainstream population,” and “Culture and Identity Production in Baku, Azerbaijan” were discussed at the meeting.


                      Opportunities for Learning at Khazar University Grow Even Broader: IELTS Class Added to Curriculum 

                      On June 25th, the English Language and Literature Department organized the IELTS (International English Language Test System) examination for the first time. Master and bachelor students of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences were given the opportunity to take the 4-part examination (covering reading, listening, writing and speaking skills).25 students took the exam. The project manager was Doctor of Philosophy Eldar Shahgaldiyev, director of the Division for Graduate Studies and Research. The exam was prepared and administered by the head of the Department of English Language and Literature, Calvin Tiessen, and eight of the department’s instructors. The primary results of the exam demonstrate a high level of English knowledge among students. The final results will be announced in the next few days.

                       
                      Khazar Student took 5th Place in Final Round of Univision Contest 

                      On May 17th, the final round of the Univision Song Contest among universities was held at Heydar Aliyev Palace.  Pinar Alakbarova, student of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences who represented Khazar University in the contest, won 5th place with her performance of the song "I Will Always Love You." We congratulate Pinar and wish her success in her future career.


                      Faculty Student in Univision Contest 

                      On May 15th, 2012 at 19:00, the Univision Song Contest among universities took place at the Heydar Aliyev Palace. Pinar Alakbarova, student of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, represented Khazar University in the contest. She made it into the final round of the competition, which will be held at the same location at 19:00 on May 17th. We congratulate Pinar and wish her success in the final round!


                      New President Elected for the Student Assembly 

                      On April 25th, presidential elections for the Student Assembly were held at both the main building of Khazar University and the downtown School of Economics and Management.52.95 percent of the student body voted. As a result of the election, 2nd year student of the School of Education Aysel Tagiyeva collected 82.04 percent of the votes and was elected President of the Student Assembly. The other candidate, student of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Shemmed Nuri, collected 16.87 percent of the votes. We congratulate the newly-elected president of the Student Assembly and wish her success in her future activities.


                      School's Dean Meeting with USAID Expert 

                      On the 23rd of February, Jabir Khalilov, the dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, met with Natalija Stamenkovich, who was visiting Azerbaijan within the USAID Rule of Law Assessment Program in Azerbaijan. They held broad discussions about the problems and needs of legal education. Specifically discussed topics included the necessity of restoration of the law departments in private universities, improvement of methods of teaching, inclusion of interactive methods in legal education, establishment of legal clinics and restoration of practical knowledge and skills of the students, publication of law textbooks, technical maintenance of classrooms, and provision of law libraries with domestic and international publications.


                      “Psychology Day” 

                      “Psychology day” was held in Khazar University’s Marble Hall, organized by the Psychology Department and with the active participation of second year students majoring in Psychology in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Instructors and students of the university and other invited guests participated in the event. The event was opened by the director of the Psychological Counseling and Psychotherapy Center of the University, Ulker Isayeva, who gave general information related to psychological topics. The concept of psychology and current psychological diseases were discussed in the event. Topics such as Schizophrenia, depression and suicide, drug addiction, behavior issues, and Down syndrome proved to be very interesting to the participants. The founder of the university and Chairman of the Board of Directors and Trustees Professor Hamlet Isaxanli was very pleased with the event and congratulated the students who had made presentations.
